In The Arena
BEFORE THE JANUARY 2006 publication of “In The Arena: The NCAA’s First Century,” the NCAA chose to publish a digital edition at a later date and to use that edition to house the book’s scholarly particulars — citations, bibliography and appendices. In this version, the citations, in the form of endnotes, follow each of the seven chapters; the bibliography and appendices are in their usual place, bringing up the rear of the book. This digital edition also provides the author an opportunity (which he has gratefully seized) to make both editorial and substantive corrections to the text.

In the Arena: The NCAA's First Century
A new book by former University of Nevada President Joseph N. Crowley kicks off the celebration of the NCAA's 100th birthday in 2006. Crowley chronicles the development of the modern-day NCAA, with special attention on the history of the last 25 years. The book pays particular attention to the evolution of major legislation, the increasing role of women and minorities in the Association, the effect of litigation and governmental influence, and ongoing changes in rules enforcement. Crowley, author of "No Equal in the World: An Interpretation of the Academic Presidency" and "The Constant Conversation," also monitors the increasing role of college and university presidents in the governance of the Association. The generously illustrated book will be a must read for those who want to better understand the uniquely American enterprise of intercollegiate athletics.

Initial Publication of Proposed Legislation

National Study of Student Athletes Regarding Their Experiences as College Students
Our purpose for the survey was two-fold. First, we sought to expand the information base regarding the student experience of student-athletes by asking them to describe and evaluate that experience. In particular, we sought to have them identify any tradeoffs they make in order to compete, and, even more particularly, to assess those tradeoffs. Second, we hoped that the responses might serve as pointers to enhance the student experience of student-athletes and assure them a well rounded and quality educational experience.
